Yerba mate, also known as mate tea, is a caffeinated beverage made from the leaves and twigs of the South American plant (ilex paraguariensis). It is traditionally brewed with hot or cold water and is characterized by its slightly bitter, earthy taste and stimulating effect.
Although yerba mate is often called 'mate tea,' it is not technically a true tea, as it does not come from the tea plant (camellia sinensis).
The Guarani Indians knew it as a remedy for fatigue and to suppress hunger.

The bombilla is a special drinking straw with an integrated filter, traditionally used for enjoying yerba mate (mate tea). It allows you to drink the infusion directly from the vessel (mate cup) without the delicate mate leaves getting into your mouth, and is an integral part of South American mate culture.
Not every bombilla (drinking straw for yerba mate) fits every mate, and vice versa. If you want to assemble your own set, make sure everything fits together well before buying. A bombilla that is too short will disappear inside the cup, and one that is too long can tip it over.
